I was googling quotes about horses and came upon this one that summarizes everything I guess “you see a beast, I see my best friend”.
Equines are such underestimated animals, and unfortunately, many of them live horrible, short lives and die painful deaths, especially in developing countries. Such a shame for such magnificent, proud and most of all loyal animals. Equiens are loyal, they are loyal to us, not because they are stupid as we think they are, but because they trust us for some reason. We’ve domesticated them, and their lives, their happiness and their well being depends on us.
Horse rescue does not really differ from dog or cat rescue at its core, but there are two big problems when rescuing equines that make the whole thing a million times more difficult.
The first problem is the size. You get a call for a cat or a dog, you take the car, drive off and come back with the animal in the back seat or the boot. You get a call for a horse or a donkey, and you need to set up an entire operation, involve a number of people, figure out ways to get to the spot, transport the animal that may be passed out so it needs to be lifted, and most importantly, have the space for it. All of us who rescue dogs and cats are used to keeping animals in our cars and bathrooms, but that’s not the case for any equine.
The second major problem in Greece is the law. The Greek law sees horses, donkeys and mules as objects, so when it comes to abuse, it’s difficult to intervene. ESPI has managed to confiscate horses with the help of animal charities, using the recent law about pets as a shield. But basically, all equines are still unprotected, and unfortunately, for the majority of the Greek public, they are only seen as tools and objects that serve a purpose (until they don’t)

Fanny used to have the life of every other dog in rural Greece, on a chain 24/7. Mani, where she comes from is one of the most beautiful and touristic places in Greece, and yet some of the most horrible ones when it comes to animal welfare. Dogs spending a lifetime on a chain, uncontrollable births, dozens of litters of unwanted puppies abandoned every day and of course thousands of stray and unwanted dogs that barely last six months on the streets before they are poisoned, shot or ran over by a car. It is impossible to rescue all those dogs - they are simply too many and they have nowhere to be placed. Sick dogs are a priority, but even then sometimes they receive their treatments while on the streets, because there is no room for them anywhere, and of course the females, that are at least spayed and released. The local volunteers had spotted Fanny months ago, and one day, when for some reason her “owner” let her loose, she was immediately collected and brought to the local shelter. She spent some months there and then Zaira brought her to Athens, where she spends most of her time in a dog hotel, waiting for a forever home. This was story that happened without me really, but it did happen "in my home" - aka, The Orphan Pet facebook page. It took me a day to realize that under a post about Ellie, the woman who managed to bring her Greek stray from Greece to Australia, another fairy tale was happening, as comments were going back and forth, among Meredith, her friend Sheldon, and two Greek rescuers who contacted each other and located the dog she had fallen in love with. Nafpactos, where Charisma comes from, has a huge number of strays, animal abuse is an everyday thing and the local rescuers really struggle. The fact that Charisma was found alive and well is itself a miracle.
The money raised from the crowdfunding will go to her medical bills and transportation fees from Greece to Phoenix. The rescue is run by volunteers. Any extra money raised will be donated back to help rescue other dogs in need.

Animals in Greece this week started as a crazy idea, and now I am addicted. With more and more stories piling up every week, the situation is so ridiculous that irony and sarcasm seem the only way to deal with all that. What happens here every day is so overwhelming, that it simply feels ridiculous. If I don’t laugh about it, I will cry, and there is already a lot of misery around animal welfare, so I am counting on some originality for a change. There are about 15 stories in each video, and every time I bust my head trying to figure out which ones to select. Had I been presenting everything I see in my Facebook homepage every week, the video would be longer than a Tarkovsky film. Each and every one of this stories paints a pretty good picture of how things work here in Greece, politically, economically and socially, and this is…interesting (?) and at the same time overwhelming and devastating. I was in Mani, Greece for a few days, visiting the local shelter. I could hear the kitten crying for about 24 hours on the second floor of a traditional tower house of the 19th century, and as the hours went by it sounded more desperate and its family more concerned. It seemed to be trapped under the wooden floor, which can easily happen, but we couldn't see it. We left food around all the openings, hoping that the smell would lead to the exit, but that didn't work.When Yannis arrived with a ladder the next morning, we realized that it was actually inside the wall, trapped between the stones, unable to move. I had to cut the video very short, but it took two hours of hard work in 40 degrees Celsius, to remove stones and make a big enough opening in the wall for Yannis to put his hand in an grab it. The family is feral, and it lives around this neighborhood, where the owners of the tower house provide them with food and water. The mum will be caught and spayed, and so will the four babies, once they are old enough. Congratulations to the owner who immediately responded and sent Yannis with instructions to do whatever it takes to remove the kitten alive. Anyone who has a basic idea about animal welfare in Greece knows that what these volunteers are facing is just too common. Puppies abandoned, puppies in trash, mother dogs dumped with their newborns etc are the only way for most irresponsible dog owners in Greece to "get rid of the problem" - a problem that they created by not spaying and neutering their dogs, by letting them breed uncontrollably, by not caring the slightest about any animal's well being, including their dogs'. If you knew the number of abandoned litters of puppies that are found on the streets of Greece every day you would just give up saying "there is no solution to the problem". The charity of Karditsa was formed by volunteers and is run by volunteers, which means just a few people who devote their loves to fixing the problem that others create, because no one else will, not the government, not the local authorities, not anyone. Volunteers in animal welfare here do everything on their own, from rescuing, to caring for the animals, feeding, cleaning up, rehoming and more often than not they actually pay for everything themselves, if the donations are not enough to cover the huge expenses.
